Hudson Guild Case Study

CTB, Hudson Guild

Published 2022

Background

Hudson Guild is a 100+ year old settlement house that provides early childhood education to help Chelsea and the west side community of NYC in need. Recognizing the overwhelming burden of assessments faced by teachers, which were compounded by challenges from Covid-19, the education leadership team decided to adopt Cognitive ToyBox. They saw promise in the integrated observational and game-based approach in being more user-friendly and engaging for children, while also alleviating the burden on teachers and providing accurate data for instructional planning.

Study Goals

  1. To understand how Cognitive ToyBox reduces the time spent assessing and leveling children

  2. To explore how the Cognitive ToyBox assessment data can be used to inform instruction

Challenges

The previous assessment methods before Cognitive ToyBox were not concrete and required a significant amount of time to complete. Teachers would spend 2-3 hours outside of the classroom to finish assessments, impacting instructional time. The assessment reports shared with parents were lengthy, making it challenging for families to understand their child's progress.

Outcomes

The implementation of Cognitive ToyBox brought about several positive outcomes, especially in light of challenges from Covid-19. Teachers found CTB to be a simple and concrete assessment tool, alleviating the previous burden of assessments. The assessment tool was a user-friendly and engaging experience for the children. Parent-teacher conferences became more efficient and concise, with CTB providing a one-page assessment report instead of a lengthy document. The ongoing data reports proved to be actionable, allowing teachers to plan instruction more effectively.
